Tomas Hoke, 1958 in Wien geboren, lebt heute in Wien und Saager, Kärnten. 1977 Beginn des Kunstgeschichtestudiums an der Universität, Wien. 1978 Eintritt in die Meisterklasse für Metallgestaltung und Produktdesign bei Prof. Carl Auböck an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst, Wien. Zu Beginn bestimmt die Schmuckproduktion und Zeichnung die künstlerische Tätigkeit. Unter dem Einfluß von Francis Bacon setzt sich Hoke im grafischen Bereich vorwiegend mit dem Motiv des Kopfes auseinander. Die plastischen Gestaltungen bedienen sich einer organischen Formensprache. 1981 Abbruch der akademischen Studien. Hinwendung zu einer subtilen Formen- und Materialsprache; - in Verbindung von Papier und Metall entstehen neue Schmuckarbeiten. Gleichzeitig finden figürliche Kleinplastiken Eingang ins künstlerische Schaffen. Seit Beginn der 80er Jahre zahlreiche Aufträge im öffentlichen Raum. 1985/86 Entwicklung kinetischer Plastiken aus Edelstahl und Bronze, deren technoide Formensprache an funktionsorientierte, maschinell erzeugte Fabrikate erinnert. 1987 sechsmonatiges Stipendium des Landes Kärnten an der Cité des Arts in Paris. Ende der 80er Jahre intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Stellenwert der Plastik im architektonischen Kontext. In den folgenden Jahren gewinnt die autonome Plastik immer mehr an Bedeutung. Material und Form werden hinsichtlich ihrer symbolischen Bedeutung untersucht. Die Arbeit "Kalkwerk" von 1989 dient der Sichtbarmachung chemischer Prozesse und verdeutlicht damit den werkzeugähnlichen Charakter der Konstruktion. - Die Plastik wird zum fixen Bestandteil eines aktionistischen Ereignisses. Auch die Konzeptionen der folgenden Jahre sind auf eine interaktive Teilnahme des Künstlers und/oder Rezipienten ausgerichtet. Hoke versteht die zeitgenössische Kunstproduktion als einen interdisziplinär angelegten, prozeßualen Handlungsverlauf; entsprechend dieser Auffassung fungiert der Künstler seit 1990 auch als Co-organisator von Kulturprojekten.

Tomas Hoke was born in Vienna in 1958, today he lives in Vienna and Saager, Carinthia. After graduating from high school in 1977 he enrolled at Vienna University to study art history. In 1978 he began to study metal-plastic design with Professor Carl Auböck at the University of Applied Arts of Vienna. In the beginning his artistic work focussed on jewellery production and drawing. Influenced by Francis Bacon, Mr. Hoke's concentrated on the motive of the head in his graphic work. His plastic designs make use of an organic form language. In 1981 he stopped studying. He turned towards a sophisticated form and material language; new jewellery creations combined paper and metal. At the same time he began to create small figural sculptures. From the early 80ies onwards, he has repeatedly been commissioned to create works for public facilities - designing of church interior furnishing. In 1985/86 he developed kinetic sculptures of special steel and bronze, the technoid formal language of which resembles functionally oriented, machine-made equipment. In 1987 he won a 6- month scholarship of the Province of Carinthia for the Cité des Arts in Paris. In the late 80ies he thoroughly reflected the role of sculpture in the context of architecture. In the following years autonomous sculpture is becoming more and more important. He investigates the symbolic significance of material and form. His "Kalkwerk" (lime works) of 1989 aims at visualizing chemical processes and thus illustrates the tool-like character of this arrangement. Sculpture becomes a fixed part of scenic events. Thus, in the following years his works aim at interactive participation of the artist and/or the recipients. Mr. Hoke regards contemporary art production as an interdisciplinary, process-oriented action, accordingly, he has also worked as a co-organizer of cultural projects from 1990 onward.
